In Santiago del Estero province, Argentina, the case of sexual abuse against Anna Paula Curi has made significant progress. The Court of Appeals in Criminal Matters rejected the appeals filed by the accused, Raúl Amadey and Pablo González, the father and uncle of the victim, respectively. Consequently, they will stand trial.
Anna Paula's mother, Moira Curi, confirmed the news to Noticias Argentina agency and expressed that after such a long wait, they can «finally be at peace».
In their ruling, judges Cristian Vittar, Olga Gay de Castellanos, and Gabriela Núñez stated that «the order to elevate the case to trial is not appealable», and therefore «it is appropriate to declare the inadmissibility of both appeals». The judges also rejected various requests, including a psychological and psychiatric examination of Moira, the victim's mother and a complainant, as well as the inclusion of a USB drive.
Days earlier, Diego Lindow and Eugenio Chavarría, defense attorneys for the accused, had filed various motions with the court to prevent the case from being elevated to trial. The father is accused of aggravated sexual abuse with carnal access due to kinship, and of promoting and facilitating the corruption of minors, also aggravated by kinship. The uncle is accused of seriously outrageous sexual abuse and of promoting and facilitating the corruption of minors, aggravated by the victim's age.
Anna Paula Curi's life in Santiago del Estero took a 180-degree turn in 2014 when she decided to tell her mother, after hiding it for years, about the ordeal she had endured since childhood due to abuse suffered by her political uncle, Pablo Nicolás González, and her father, Raúl Alejandro Amadey. Both accused are out on bail.
For 10 years, the victim and her family were at the center of a political game that caused the case to stall on multiple occasions, not only due to the accused's actions in filing appeals, but also because more than 10 judges passed through the case.
Now, after such a long wait, the justice system has advanced in the case, and it is expected that in the coming days there may be updates regarding the trial date for both accused.
